The Grivel G10 Evo crampons are classic 10 point crampons that are best suited to winter hillwalking and glacier crossings, when worn with traditional mountaineering boots.
As a general rule 10 points are best for walking, 12 for mountaineering and 14 points for technical ice climbing. So is a 10 point crampon right for you?
For less technical ground 10 spikes are enough, it keeps the weight down and you have fewer spikes to catch on clothing on your other leg. The spikes themselves are not too long, so you will be more stable when walking. The front points have a horizontal orientation providing better purchase on snow and soft ice.
These crampons are flexible so move with your boot a lot more, so it is noticeably more comfortable when walking compared to a more rigid crampon. The proactive anti-balling plate helps keep snow buildup to a minimum, by popping out the snow whilst you walk.
The webbing and bindings on the G10 EVO have been improved over the previous generation, now using 12mm webbing compared to 14mm. The buckle has been improved and is now easier to tighten and loosen, the extra webbing now fastens in towards the boot and wraps around the front of the ankle and can be tucked into the back.
The Grivel G10 is a crampon with a long history, and with a few modern adjustments, the G10 EVO is poised to become a classic once more.
